Sergio Roitberg in the Miami Herald

Sergio Roitberg, founder and CEO of Newlink Group, called on universities to offer new communications courses in every educational track, in an article published by The Miami Herald.

In his opinion piece, Roitberg emphasized the importance of good communication in every stage of a career, from searching for job to management at the highest levels of a company.

To illustrate, he recalls the story of Tony Hayward, CEO of BP, who lost his job and threatened the credibility of the company by making insensitive personal comments during the aftermath of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

On the other hand, Roitberg highlighted Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks, Michelle Peluso, president and CEO of Travelocity.com and John Chambers, CEO of Cisco Systems, as examples of communicators with “an exceptional ability to connect with the public” and to influence with their messages.

“Effective communication isn’t a luxury, but a necessity,” said the CEO of Newlink, adding that “investing in educating our youth on proper communication practices and tools is also preparing them for long-term success in their careers.”
