Challenge

During the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of small business owners in the Dominican Republic — especially grocery store (“colmado”) owners and café operators — were severely affected. These businesses, essential to neighborhood economies and daily community life, faced major challenges in sustainability, operations, and adapting to new demands of biosecurity, digitalization, and financial management.

Solution

The Coca-Cola System in the Dominican Republic — composed of The Coca-Cola Company and its bottling partner Bepensa Dominicana — in alliance with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and MSMEs (MICM), launched the program “Emprendamos Juntos con Coca-Cola.”

The initiative aimed to strengthen the capacities of small business owners through a comprehensive training plan covering topics such as store and café management, financial health, marketing and promotions, hygiene and biosecurity, and digital skills. The program was supported by leading academic and social institutions including PUCMM, INTEC, Fundación Banco Adopem, and Junior Achievement Dominicana, which played a key role in developing and implementing the content.

Results

Scalability: Due to the program’s success in the Dominican Republic, “Emprendamos Juntos con Coca-Cola” is now being replicated in more than 20 Caribbean countries.

This program became an example of successful public-private collaboration, aligned with the economic and social well-being vision promoted by President Luis Abinader. The Coca-Cola System, together with the MICM and allied academic and social institutions, built a high-impact synergy that empowered and supported the entrepreneurs most deeply connected to local communities.
